Lionel Messi etched his name even deeper into football history as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 to secure qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Argentine captain scored both goals in Dallas, becoming the tournament’s all-time leading scorer while guiding the defending champions into the last 32.
The 39-year-old superstar opened the scoring in the 38th minute, finishing calmly after being set up by Facundo Medina.
The goal was Messi’s 17th in World Cup history, moving him past Germany legend Miroslav Klose and setting a new tournament record.
Argentina controlled much of the contest after taking the lead, limiting Austria’s attacking opportunities.
Austria struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the match and lacked urgency in the final third despite needing a result.
While they enjoyed periods of possession, Argentina’s disciplined defence and experienced midfield prevented them from finding a breakthrough.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was rarely troubled as the South Americans managed the game effectively.
As the match entered stoppage time, Messi delivered another memorable moment.
The veteran forward initiated a counterattack before releasing Julian Alvarez, whose effort was saved by Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
However, Messi continued his run, pounced on the rebound, and fired home to score his 18th World Cup goal and seal the victory.
The brace means Messi has now scored five goals in his first two matches of the tournament, underlining his enduring quality despite approaching his 39th birthday.
His performances have once again placed him at the centre of Argentina’s World Cup ambitions as Lionel Scaloni’s side seek to retain the trophy they won four years earlier.
The victory leaves Argentina comfortably through to the knockout rounds and reinforces their status as one of the favourites for the title.
For Austria, the defeat was a disappointing display that raised questions about their attacking threat, though they remain in contention to advance.
