Liverpool manager Arne Slot has dismissed criticism of the club’s summer transfer business, insisting pundits are unfairly focusing on the scale of their £450m outlay.
The Dutchman made the comments as he prepares to hand a debut to record signing Alexander Isak in Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Liverpool sealed the £125m signing of Isak from Newcastle on deadline day, breaking the British transfer record and bringing their total spend on eight new players to £450m.
However, Slot pointed out that more than £250m had been raised through sales, and reminded critics that the club spent just £10m the previous summer. He argued that the net figures reflected smart business rather than reckless spending.
Slot suggested that some pundits “favoured other clubs” and were deliberately overlooking the context of Liverpool’s spending.
He described the summer as “great business,” highlighting that all eight signings were 25 or younger, which he said gave the club both short-term impact and long-term value.
The Dutchman also praised the quality of Liverpool’s recruits, stressing that being labelled as big spenders only underlined the calibre of players they had acquired.
Unlike some rivals, Slot said Liverpool had chosen to invest in young, emerging talent rather than more established 27-year-olds. He further noted that the funds had largely been generated internally through sales and last season’s Premier League title win.
Isak, 25, did not feature in Sunday’s 1-0 victory at Burnley as he continues to build fitness, having trained alone at Newcastle while pushing for a move.
His only action this season has been an 18-minute substitute appearance for Sweden in a defeat to Kosovo during the international break. Slot confirmed the striker would not play the full 90 minutes against Atletico but is expected to feature.
The Liverpool boss expressed confidence that once Isak reaches full fitness, he will quickly make his mark in attack. Slot said the forward’s main challenge would be achieving the sharpness required to play three times a week, but added that he was “100% sure” the Swede would score goals and deliver “special things” once fully up to speed.
