Makhachev submits Moicano to retain lightweight title

Islam Makhachev further cemented his legacy as one of the greatest lightweight fighters in UFC history with a dominant victory over Renato Moicano at UFC 311 over the weekend.

The reigning lightweight champion stepped into the octagon on short notice after Arman Tsarukyan, the original challenger, withdrew due to injury. Despite the circumstances, Makhachev delivered a flawless performance, submitting Moicano with a D’Arce choke just 4:05 into the first round.

Makhachev’s victory marked his fourth successful title defense and extended his winning streak to an incredible 15 fights, further strengthening his position as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. 

Coming into this bout, many fans and analysts viewed Moicano as a dangerous opponent. The Brazilian had been riding a four-fight win streak and was known for his well-rounded skill set and relentless fighting style. However, Makhachev’s elite grappling and composure under pressure proved too much for Moicano to handle.

The fight began with both fighters exchanging strikes, but it didn’t take long for Makhachev to impose his game plan. He secured a takedown early in the round and quickly transitioned to dominant positions on the ground. Moicano attempted to defend and scramble back to his feet, but Makhachev’s control was suffocating. The Russian champion methodically worked his way into position for the D’Arce choke, forcing Moicano to tap out before he could mount any significant offense.

After the fight, Makhachev praised Moicano for stepping up on short notice but made it clear that he is operating on another level compared to the rest of the division. “I respect Renato for taking this fight, but I’m here to show that I’m not just a champion—I’m the best fighter in the world,” Makhachev said in his post-fight interview.

Moicano expressed disappointment but remained optimistic about his future. “I gave everything I had for this opportunity, but tonight wasn’t my night,” he said. “I’ll be back stronger.”

With this victory, Makhachev not only retained his lightweight title but also set a new record for most consecutive title defenses in the division’s history. While speculation grows about who could possibly challenge him next or bring his reign to an end, one thing is quite clear now: Islam Makhachev has firmly established himself as one of MMA’s all-time greats.
