Haaland’s Late Double Sends Norway Past Brazil and Into Historic World Cup Quarter-finals

Erling Haaland scored twice in the closing stages as Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

The decisive breakthrough came in the 79th minute after a tightly contested encounter in New Jersey. Andreas Schjelderup delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area, where Haaland got ahead of defender Gabriel to head Norway into the lead. The Manchester City striker, who had been largely quiet for much of the match, struck again in the 90th minute with a powerful low effort from outside the box to put the result beyond doubt.

Brazil’s hopes were hurt by a missed opportunity early in the game. Bruno Guimaraes failed to convert a penalty in the 15th minute after Kristoffer Ajer brought down Matheus Cunha inside the box. Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced an excellent save to deny the Newcastle midfielder and went on to play a key role throughout the contest.

Norway thought they had made a dream start when Patrick Berg found the net after only four minutes. However, the goal was ruled out after Alexander Sorloth was judged to be offside in the build-up.

Nyland continued to frustrate Brazil by denying Vinicius Jr after the forward capitalized on a mistake from Norway captain Martin Odegaard. Brazil also introduced Endrick in the second half, and the teenager nearly made an instant impact but failed to hit the target when sent through one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti later turned to Neymar in search of inspiration, but Norway looked the more dangerous side during the closing stages. Alisson kept Brazil in the game with a save from Schjelderup before the Benfica winger created the opening goal with a precise cross for Haaland.

Nyland added another important stop in the 86th minute by pushing a looping effort onto the post, preserving Norway’s advantage before Haaland sealed the win with his second goal.

Brazil were awarded another penalty deep into stoppage time after referee Ismail Elfath ruled that Leo Ostigard had elbowed Casemiro. Neymar converted from the spot, but the late goal proved only a consolation as Brazil exited the tournament before the quarter-finals for the first time since 1990.

Norway will now face either England or co-hosts Mexico in the quarter-finals, while Haaland’s brace took him level with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi on seven goals in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot.
