Villarreal stun champions Barcelona to seal Champions league spot

Villarreal pulled off a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over newly crowned La Liga champions Barcelona at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, securing a top-five finish and a coveted spot in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League. The result not only ended Barca’s celebratory week on a sour note but also capped off a spirited late-season surge for the visitors.

Barcelona had clinched the league title just days earlier with a 2-0 win over Espanyol and celebrated with over half a million fans. Despite the emotional high, they started the match flat, conceding in the fourth minute when Ayoze Pérez latched onto a cross from Nicolas Pépé to give Villarreal an early lead. The hosts responded well, though, and regained control before the break with two quickfire goals.

Teen sensation Lamine Yamal equalised with a moment of individual brilliance, cutting inside before curling a low left-footed shot into the far corner—his ninth league goal of the season. Just before half-time, Fermin López fired Barca into the lead with a fierce half-volley from the edge of the area after Yamal had earlier rattled the crossbar with a dazzling solo effort.

Despite Barcelona’s dominance in the first half, Villarreal came out strong after the break. Within five minutes, Santi Comesaña beat the offside trap to meet Yeremy Pino’s incisive through-ball and coolly chipped over Marc-André ter Stegen to level the match. Barcelona’s defence, which has struggled to keep clean sheets all season, was again exposed under pressure.

As the match entered its final stages, Villarreal pressed for a winner and were rewarded in the 80th minute when substitute Tajon Buchanan slotted home Gerard Moreno’s low cross at the far post. The win pushes Villarreal eight points ahead of sixth-placed Real Betis with one game left, confirming their place in next season’s expanded Champions League format.

The match was another high-scoring thriller between the two sides, who have now produced 26 goals in their last four La Liga meetings—more than any other pairing since the start of last season.

Despite the loss, Barcelona can take pride in their domestic double, while Villarreal can now look forward to competing on Europe’s biggest stage once again.
